CPR Signs Qld: Your Obligations

By Alan Dukes

Are you a pool owner who wants to know your obligations regarding CPR signs in Qld? Look no further.

First, you need to have a compliant CPR sign. CPR signs help to prevent drowning.

What Makes a CPR Sign Compliant in Qld?

To be compliant, a cardiopulmonary resuscitation sign (CPR sign) must:

  1. Be at least 30cm x 30cm
  2. Be made of durable, weather-resistant material
  3. Include the required information

What Information Must Be Included in Your CPR Sign?

A compliant CPR sign must tell people to:

  • Call 000
  • Stay with the person
  • Administer first-aid

It must also tell people how to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation according to the latest guidelines (Note the 2021 revision made no changes to the CPR guidelines).

In plain English these guidelines include:

  1. Doing 30 chest compressions, then 2 breaths for all ages (repeat as needed)
  2. Not stopping to check for changes in breathing

So, when do you stop? When any of these happen:

  • It becomes obvious they are breathing normally
  • You are too exhausted to continue
  • A paramedic (or other health professional) arrives and takes over CPR
  • A paramedic (or other health professional) tells you to stop

Other Obligations

As well as having a compliant CPR sign, you must:

  • Display your sign where it is easily visible (it isn’t any help if the person performing CPR can’t see it)
  • Ensure your sign is replaced if it becomes unreadable or hard to read (e.g., faded or damaged)

Additional Suggestions

Your CPR sign will be far more effective if you can use it as a prompt to remember the formal CPR training that you chose to do.
